Miami – Bimini nonstop launches as South Bimini airport enters an $80m PPP modernization program

American Airlines has launched the first-ever nonstop service between the United States and Bimini, establishing a direct air link between Miami International Airport and South Bimini Airport and marking a significant step in the island’s aviation accessibility. The route, inaugurated on February 14, 2026, was confirmed by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, which described the new service as a “milestone in expanding connectivity to the country’s Out Islands.”

Operated three times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays using Embraer 175 aircraft, the new flight departs Miami at 10:05 a.m. and arrives in Bimini at 10:55 a.m., with the return leg departing at 11:40 a.m. and arriving in Miami at 12:30 p.m. The sub-one-hour flight time places Bimini within direct reach of American Airlines’ largest international gateway, eliminating the need for indirect routing through Nassau or other regional hubs.

Government officials framed the route as a structural shift in the island’s accessibility profile. “This is a game-changer for Bimini,” said I. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, noting that the nonstop connection enhances accessibility while supporting a new phase of economic development for the island. The launch also aligns with the ministry’s broader strategy to expand direct access to the archipelago’s Family Islands.

Integration into American Airlines’ expanding Bahamas network

The addition of Bimini brings American Airlines’ Bahamas network to seven destinations, reinforcing the carrier’s position as the largest U.S. airline serving the country after more than three decades of operations. The airline plans to increase its overall capacity to the Bahamas by 24% during the summer season, with up to 35 daily departures from the United States across Nassau, Freeport, Marsh Harbour, Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera, George Town, and now Bimini.

American Airlines executives emphasized the operational and strategic logic of the expansion. José María Giraldo, Managing Director of Operations for Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Central America, noted that the new route strengthens connectivity through Miami while reaffirming the airline’s long-term commitment to the Bahamian market. By integrating Bimini into its scheduled network, American extends direct access to a destination previously reliant on indirect connectivity, improving its accessibility for both leisure and commercial travel.

The introduction of nonstop service also places Bimini within the operational framework of a major U.S. carrier’s regional network, providing a more stable and scalable platform for sustained traffic growth.

Infrastructure modernization under an $80 million public-private partnership

The launch of the Miami–Bimini route coincides with a major infrastructure upgrade program at South Bimini Airport, supported by an $80 million public-private partnership agreement. The two-phase modernization project is designed to expand the airport’s operational capacity and align its infrastructure with the requirements of sustained commercial aviation activity.

Planned improvements include airfield enhancements, terminal upgrades, and the construction of a new passenger terminal, alongside broader facility modernization to support increased domestic and international traffic. These upgrades are intended not only to accommodate current airline operations but also to create the operational conditions necessary for future network expansion.

The airport redevelopment forms part of the government’s wider Family Islands Renaissance initiative, which seeks to modernize aviation infrastructure across the archipelago and improve access to secondary destinations.

Part of a broader national airport transformation strategy

The Bimini project sits within the Bahamas’ Out Islands Renaissance Project, launched in 2023, which targets the development and modernization of 14 airports across the country. This national program reflects a strategic shift toward strengthening aviation infrastructure beyond Nassau, supporting regional economic diversification and reducing reliance on a single primary gateway.

By pairing infrastructure modernization with new airline service, the government is pursuing a coordinated approach to aviation development. Infrastructure upgrades enhance the airport’s operational readiness, while new airline routes generate immediate connectivity gains, creating mutually reinforcing momentum.

For Bimini, the alignment of direct U.S. connectivity with infrastructure investment establishes a new operational baseline. The combination of network integration and physical modernization positions the airport to support sustained growth, transforming its accessibility profile and reinforcing its role within the Bahamas’ evolving aviation network.
