Bonaire’s US arrivals fall 16% as North American airlift shifts

Bonaire, in the Caribbean Netherlands, welcomed 13,701 stayover visitors in August 2026, down 5% from 14,435 a year earlier. The headline decline masks a sharper shift in the island’s source markets: US arrivals fell 16.2%, while the Netherlands remained broadly stable, highlighting the importance of air connectivity and route diversification for Bonaire’s aviation strategy.

US arrivals drive most of Bonaire’s August decline

Tourism Corporation Bonaire recorded 3,738 US visitors in August 2026, compared with 4,459 in August 2025. The decline of 721 visitors represents a 16.2% year-on-year contraction and accounts for almost the entire net decrease of 734 stayover visitors recorded by Bonaire over the same period.

The United States consequently represented 27.3% of Bonaire’s stayover arrivals in August 2026, down from around 30.9% a year earlier. The figures matter from an aviation perspective because the United States remains Bonaire’s second-largest international source market and depends on a relatively limited number of direct gateways.

Bonaire had already recorded softer US demand in July 2026. US arrivals fell from 4,565 in July 2025 to 4,044 in July 2026, a decline of around 11.4%, while total stayover arrivals decreased 4% year-on-year. The August figures therefore extend a pattern already visible earlier in the summer rather than representing an isolated monthly fluctuation.

A different US airlift mix in summer 2026

Bonaire entered summer 2026 with a different North American network from the one available a year earlier. JetBlue operated a twice-weekly nonstop service between New York-JFK and Bonaire during summer 2025, adding another direct gateway to the island’s US network.

JetBlue ended the New York-JFK–Bonaire route on January 3, 2026. Tourism Corporation Bonaire said when the termination was announced that the service had recorded average load factors below 60%, illustrating the challenge of sustaining relatively thin leisure routes even when they add valuable market access.

Bonaire’s August 2026 schedule continued to provide direct US connectivity through American Airlines from Miami, Delta Air Lines from Atlanta and United Airlines from Houston. United Airlines’ Newark service was also absent for part of the summer, with the route scheduled to resume on October 31, 2026.

The reduction in US arrivals cannot be attributed directly to any single route change on the basis of the available data. The August 2026 performance does, however, show that softer US demand coincided with a different and less diversified North American airlift environment than Bonaire had during summer 2025.

Amsterdam remains Bonaire’s strongest long-haul base

The Netherlands provided a much more stable source of demand for Bonaire in August 2026. Tourism Corporation Bonaire recorded 6,114 Dutch visitors, compared with 6,192 in August 2025, representing a decline of only 1.3%.

Dutch visitors accounted for 44.6% of all stayover arrivals in August 2026, reinforcing the Netherlands’ position as Bonaire’s largest source market. The limited decline contrasts sharply with the 16.2% contraction from the United States.

Bonaire’s Amsterdam connectivity is also structurally deeper than its network to most other long-haul markets. KLM operates daily service between Amsterdam and Bonaire, while TUI and Corendon provide additional frequencies. The relative resilience of Dutch demand therefore coincides with one of the island’s most extensive and consistent long-haul air service offerings.

The August 2026 figures do not demonstrate that frequency alone protects a market from weaker demand. The contrast between the Netherlands and the United States nevertheless underlines the value of having several operators and substantial capacity linking Bonaire with a major source market.

Curaçao decline adds pressure to regional demand

Curaçao remained Bonaire’s third-largest source market in August 2026, but arrivals also declined sharply. Bonaire received 1,591 visitors from Curaçao, down from 1,856 in August 2025, representing a 14.3% decrease.

The fall is notable because Bonaire and Curaçao benefit from frequent inter-island air links, including scheduled services operated by regional carriers such as Divi Divi Air and Z Air. The performance of the Curaçao market therefore illustrates that dense connectivity does not automatically translate into stronger passenger demand.

Several smaller markets moved in the opposite direction during August 2026. Aruba increased from 221 to 268 visitors, Colombia from 131 to 149, Brazil from 85 to 117, and Italy from 76 to 172. The increases remain too small in absolute terms to offset losses from the United States and Curaçao, but they provide early evidence of a broader diversification in Bonaire’s source-market mix.

Route diversification remains central to Bonaire’s strategy

Tourism Corporation Bonaire and Bonaire International Airport continued to pursue new and stronger airline relationships during Routes Americas 2026 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Bonaire delegation held meetings with carriers including Avianca, Copa Airlines, Wingo, GOL, WestJet, American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, KLM and TUI.

Bonaire’s August 2026 performance gives those route-development efforts additional relevance. The island remains heavily dependent on the Netherlands, the United States and Curaçao, while gains from smaller markets are not yet large enough to materially change the balance.

For Bonaire’s aviation sector, the strategic question is therefore not simply how to restore overall arrival growth. The larger challenge is how to maintain resilient capacity in established gateways while broadening access to additional markets that can support year-round demand and reduce exposure to changes in a small number of routes.
