As airports worldwide seek to reduce emissions while improving operational efficiency, renewable energy is becoming an increasingly strategic component of airport infrastructure. In Guadeloupe, this transition is taking shape through a large-scale photovoltaic project designed not only to lower the airport ‘s carbon footprint but also to reinforce its long-term energy resilience.
According to Guadeloupe Maryse Condé International Airport’s 2026 press kit, the airport plans to develop a 6.5 MWp photovoltaic power plant, making it the largest solar installation in Guadeloupe. Of the total installed capacity, 2.5 MWp will be dedicated to on-site self-consumption, supplying part of the airport’s own electricity demand. This approach positions renewable energy as an operational asset rather than simply an environmental initiative.
From sustainability objective to operational strategy
For airports, electricity has become a critical operational resource. Passenger terminals, baggage handling systems, security equipment, lighting, air conditioning and airside operations all contribute to significant and continuous energy consumption.
Against this backdrop, producing electricity on-site offers multiple strategic advantages. By increasing self-consumption, airports can reduce their dependence on external electricity supply, improve cost predictability and strengthen operational resilience—an important consideration for island territories where energy systems are often more vulnerable to supply constraints and price volatility.
The Guadeloupe project reflects this broader evolution. Rather than focusing solely on carbon reduction, it integrates renewable energy into the airport’s long-term infrastructure strategy.
A project with measurable environmental impact
The future solar facility will comprise approximately 14,000 photovoltaic modules with an estimated annual production of 11.3 GWh of electricity. According to airport projections, this output corresponds to the equivalent annual electricity consumption of around 7,000 people and could avoid approximately 3,400 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
The project will be developed in two complementary sections. One installation, covering around two hectares, will primarily support airport self-consumption, while a second installation will inject additional renewable electricity into the local grid. Together, the two facilities are intended to maximise both operational efficiency and territorial energy benefits.
Supporting Guadeloupe’s energy resilience
Beyond airport operations, the project also carries broader significance for Guadeloupe’s energy transition.
According to the Guadeloupe airport, the use of locally generated solar energy is expected to contribute to the territory’s energy independence while supporting the decarbonisation of airport activities. The development is also expected to generate local employment during both the construction and operational phases, with maintenance activities planned to be carried out by locally trained personnel.
For island economies, where imported energy continues to represent a structural challenge, infrastructure capable of producing part of its own electricity can contribute to greater resilience while supporting wider sustainability objectives.
Part of a broader airport transformation
The photovoltaic project is not an isolated initiative. It forms part of the airport’s wider modernisation programme, which also includes the planned expansion of Terminal T1 through the MADAPTE T1 project.
Airport authorities indicate that the future terminal has been designed with environmental performance in mind. The expansion will incorporate bioclimatic design principles, rainwater management systems and energy-efficient solutions, while the photovoltaic plant is expected to support the long-term ambition of moving the airport towards an “energy-positive” operating model.
Together, these projects illustrate a shift in airport investment priorities. Capacity expansion remains essential, but increasing attention is also being given to infrastructure capable of reducing operating costs, improving environmental performance and enhancing long-term resilience.
