British Airways Boosts Barbados Winter Seat Capacity by 70%

British Airways

British Airways has launched its daily London Gatwick–Barbados service, marking a major expansion of air connectivity between the United Kingdom and the Caribbean island. The new schedule is expected to increase the airline’s winter seat capacity by 70%, with additional services planned for 2027.

The first flight of the relaunched service arrived at Grantley Adams International Airport on October 25, 2026, carrying 135 passengers. Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) organised a welcome ceremony to mark the occasion.

According to the Barbados Government Information Service, the expansion represents the largest increase in British Airways seat capacity to the island. It follows the airline’s announcement earlier this year of a broader winter schedule covering several Caribbean destinations.

British Airways Expands UK–Barbados Flight Capacity

The new daily service from London Gatwick complements British Airways’ existing flights from London Heathrow.

Heathrow services will operate daily through November before increasing to twice daily between December 2026 and March 2027. Combined with the Gatwick service, this will give Barbados three daily direct British Airways flights from the United Kingdom during the peak winter period.

The expanded schedule is expected to deliver a 70% increase in winter seat capacity compared with the previous season. According to Barbados tourism authorities, the additional flights could generate more than 120,000 extra seats annually.

The figures represent projected airline capacity rather than confirmed passenger arrivals.

London Gatwick also confirmed on October 27 that the renewed route would bring the airport’s total scheduled services to Bridgetown to 14 flights per week, nearly doubling its offering compared with the previous winter.

Barbados Strengthens Southern Caribbean Connections

Beyond increasing direct capacity from the United Kingdom, the new Gatwick service will support connections to other destinations in the Southern Caribbean.

Under British Airways’ winter 2026 network expansion, the Barbados route includes onward services to Grenada, Guyana and Tobago.

The initial schedules published by AeroRoutes provide for three weekly services to Grenada and two weekly services each to Georgetown, Guyana, and Tobago, operating via Bridgetown.

These routes were previously operated through Saint Lucia, which now has a dedicated daily nonstop service from London Gatwick.

The changes establish Bridgetown as an intermediate stop for several British Airways services linking London with the Southern Caribbean, while maintaining direct connections between the United Kingdom and Barbados.

Daily Gatwick Service to Continue into Summer 2027

British Airways’ expansion is not limited to the 2026–2027 winter season. The airline also plans to maintain its daily London Gatwick service throughout summer 2027, alongside its Heathrow operation.

This would provide Barbados with two daily British Airways flights during the summer, a first for the destination.

The Barbadian authorities anticipate an increase of more than 100% in the airline’s summer seat capacity compared with the previous year. The additional services are expected to support demand outside the traditional winter travel period and strengthen year-round connections with the UK market.

The new Gatwick route forms part of British Airways’ wider network adjustments, which also include increased frequencies to Kingston, Jamaica, and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
